Solubility of Gases

SOLUBILITY

It is defined as the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in given quantity of the solvent as a particular temperature
or
Solubility of a substance is the amount of substance that dissolves in 100g of the solvent at a given temperature to form a saturated solution.

 Solubility of Gases

The Solubility of a substance depends upon:

  • The nature of solute and solvent
  • Temperature
  • Molecular size
  • Pressure

Nature of Solute and Solvent

  • Solid Solute: solid solute get dissolved in solvent which has comparatively similar intermolecular interactions i.e. “like dissolves like”

For example, Ionic solid such as NaCl dissolved readily in a polar solvent like water whereas covalent solid such as naphthalene, anthracene dissolve readily in non-polar solvents like benzene, ether, CCl4 etc.
  • Gaseous Solute: gases like H2, O2 N2 He etc. have less solubility in water as compared solubility of NH3, HCL, SO2 etc. in water. The reason for higher solubility is the chemical reactivity of gases with water.
