Meaning of Lasers
The term LASER stands for the
Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of
Radiations.
History of Lasers
- THE LASER WAS INTRODUCED TO THE SCIENTIFIC WORLD
IN 1960s.
2. THE FIRST
LASER WAS DEVELOPED BY T.H. MAIMAN IN YEAR 1960.
3. THE PRACTICAL USE OF LASERS IS PREDICTED BY C.
H. TOWNES.
Types of Lasers
- SOLID STATES LASERS.
- SEMICONDUCTOR LASERS.
- GAS LASERS.
- ELECTRO IONIZATION LASERS.
- GAS DYNAMIC LASERS.
- CHEMICAL LASERS.
I.
Solid States Lasers.
In this
types of lasers active centers (Cr, Co, Nd etc) are dispersed in a dielectric
crystals or glass material. Conc. Is
just about 1%.
The
various solid states lasers:
1.
Ruby
Lasers.
2.
Nd:YAG
lasers
3.
Colour
center lasers.
II. Gas Lasers
The Active medium used in lasers is gaseous.
The
various gas lasers are:
1.
He-Ne
Lasers.
2.
CO2
lasers.
III. Semiconductor Lasers
A
semiconductor lasers is a specially designed pn-junction diode device that
emits coherent light under the forward
biased condition. the first semiconductor laser was designed by R. N. hat et.
Al in 1962 in U.S.A.
